Insulation is routinely measured by its insulation R-value or 'thermal resistance level'. This is the measure of the thermal resistance to heat transfer displayed by the product. The higher the number between 1 and 4 the lower the heat transfer.

The internal area beneath:
- a galvanised roof recorded 53°C
- a roof painted with white paint recorded 42°C
- a roof painted with Insultec recorded 37°C
Closer to home, heat absorption rates recorded by Vipac Engineers and Scientists Ltd, Port Melbourne, varied by as much as 15% for Insultec roof insulation, 29% for galvanised steel and between 25% and 80% for various Colorbonded colours.
